INTRODUCTION

KÄFER 38/06 EDITION

Edition of Mechanical Timepieces including Original Material of one of the oldest “Beetles”

In collaboration with the Grundmann Family – collectors and restorers of rare vintage Volkswagen – the Scalfaro Team created a unique edition of timepieces including original material from the iconic Käfer – VW38 (Chassis #38/06).

The Edition is limited to 630 pieces.

DESIGN

This extraordinary edition was inspired by the legendary “Brezelkäfer” VW38, with its characteristic split rear windows. The timepiece features numerous design elements from the Brezelkäfer such as the numerals from the tachymeter, the Veigel gearshift pattern at 6h, the Brezel-Window engraving on the caseback…

Each limited editon no. is hand-embossed into the caseback just like the chassis numbers in the days of 38/06.

ORIGINAL KÄFER 38/06 MATERIAL

Each edition timepiece includes original material of the iconic Käfer VW38 chassis no. 38/06. This special car is one of only three remaining VW38 prototypes in the world and thus one of the oldest Käfers. It is owned by the Grundmann Family – collectors and restorers of rare vintage Volkswagen and our partner for this edition. The original parts were supplied by the Grundmann Family and subsequently integrated into the watch cases of the edition, so that each of the numbered edition watches includes the DNA of the car.

SHORT BIO OF KÄFER CHASSIS #38/06:

Originally developed by Ferdinand Porsche and designed by Erwin Komenda the VW38 was hand-built in 1938 at Porsche as one of three prototypes of the first generation of the car later to be known and loved as “Käfer” (= beetle, bug).

Chassis 38/06 is one of the three oldest Käfer prototypes in existance. The story of its re-discovery and rescue reads like a cold-war thriller. It was lost in Eastern Europe and finally re-discovered in 2008 in Lithuania. the Grundmann family brought the car back to Germany in a – let’s say – adventurous operation and afterwards meticulously restored the car to its original state. The discovery and restoration of chassis 38/06 are beautifully re-told in the book “Der erste Brezelkäfer” by Christian Grundmann, Axel Struwe and Clauspeter Becker.

For many people the Käfer stands for countless positive memories: for many families it was their first car ever, it enabled the first holiday excursions, it was driven by Flower Power,… It is not just a car, but it represented a major step for many families giving them mobility and freedom thus making it one of the most legendary and most loved vehicles of our time.

THE GRUNDMANN FAMILY:

The Grundmann family is deeply devoted to preserving the history and legend of the early Volkswagen cars. they are very active in the vintage VW scene and have assembled an impressive collection of over 70 rare and amiable VW cars which they display in their museum in Hessisch Oldendorf (near Hanover).

But, the Grundmann’s biggest coup to date is the discovery and rescue of one of the rarest Volkswagen of them all – the VW 38/06 – one of only three remaining Käfer prototypes. The discovery of the car in Lithuania and the subsequent search for original parts and the restoration process was closely followed and assisted by Käfer Enthusiasts around the world via the online forum Thesamba.com (the forum discussion started in 2009 with a post showing a few pictures and asking the simple question “Could this be a VW38?”). A truly fascinating story…

We had the pleasure of collaborating with Traugott and Christian Grundmann (father & son) to realize this extraordinary edition. Apart from supplying us with original material of chassis 38/06 (original metal sheet from the roof section) for integration into the watch cases, they gave us ivaluable design input and feedback which lead to the creation of this edition of timepieces which perfectly celebrates the classic Käfer design.
